Whoa, David Brooks said what???

This is scary, very scary. The idea that David  Brooks could get anything right freaks me the fuck out, especially after reading his OpEd at the NYT, a section of which is quoted below:

All this money and technology seems to have reduced the risk of future attack. But, of course, the system is bound to fail sometimes. Reality is unpredictable, and no amount of computer technology is going to change that. Bureaucracies are always blind because they convert the rich flow of personalities and events into crude notations that can be filed and collated. Human institutions are always going to miss crucial clues because the information in the universe is infinite and events do not conform to algorithmic regularity.

Resilient societies have a level-headed understanding of the risks inherent in this kind of warfare.

But, of course, this is not how the country has reacted over the past week. There have been outraged calls for Secretary Janet Napolitano of the Department of Homeland Security to resign, as if changing the leader of the bureaucracy would fix the flaws inherent in the bureaucracy. There have been demands for systemic reform — for more protocols, more layers and more review systems.

Much of the criticism has been contemptuous and hysterical. Various experts have gathered bits of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab’s biography. Since they can string the facts together to accurately predict the past, they thunder, the intelligence services should have been able to connect the dots to predict the future.

I am a..brown Cali bitch that is quite the opinionated, political, pain-in-the-ass, in your face kinda girl that also loves baseball and music to a fault. Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe.--Albert Einstein-*

  1. The call for her resignation comes from the groupthink that it's easier to cut off the head of the beast than to deal with the monster as a whole. The problem is that Homeland Security and the Intelligence Community's lack of collaboration is more like an octupus with tentacles in every which way, that at times act without rhyme or reason.

Bottom line: I think we were damn lucky Christmas Day – many things went our way. But our safety can't rely on luck and the solutions don't begin by shooting from the hip or blocking out the sun with one finger. Napolitano was an attorney and frankly, I think there should have been a better choice for this role but even if she is replaced, it won't resolve the inherent issues that were revealed with this recent incident. People that need to still aren't talking to each other and our safety is coming down to the winner of a pissing contest. Hopefully, Obama will finally get these people to talk to each other and fix what has been broken for so long before we have another scare.

  2. It's probably easier for David Brooks to think straight now that he isnt busy apologizing and rationalizing the Administration  But who exactly is making “outraged calls for Secretary Janet Napolitano of the Department of Homeland Security to resign”? Is it really “the country”, or is it the small group of people who were formerly in power but still carry a very sympathetic Press in their pocket to make their voices heard loud and clear, very much like a multitude, but without the messy need for a majority? As someone else (I forget who right now) pointed out, we had a very similar situation a few years ago back when a young Brit attempted to light his shoe, rather than his pants, and I dont recall anyone demanding anyone elses resignation on that occassion.
